Set Yourself Free

soarAt our core, what we humans treasure most is our freedom. History has proved as much, time and time again. And, yet, how often do we allow ourselves to become enslaved by low self-esteem, the fear of failure, a sense of “obligation,” or, perhaps worst of all, memories of a past that no longer exists?

We might stay in unhealthy and unhappy relationships because, deep inside, there is a part of us that believes we are not worthy of something more. We can lament an unsatisfying and distressing career for years because we “need” the money and find it difficult to risk doing anything different. We may recall the past and use it as a marker of our abilities and self-worth because we fail to remember that we are different now; and the events of the past are no longer realities. They are but memories that have no more power over us or our lives than we choose to allow. But we forget.

We forget that the keys to happiness are always in our own hands. We forget that we have a right to say “No” or “Enough!” when that is what we mean. We forget that we are each sovereign beings with a divine right to exercise our free will in ways that create our happiness and bring a sense of fulfillment to our lives. We forget to love ourselves, to honor ourselves, to have compassion upon ourselves, and to trust in our own abilities.

Today, I would like to share one of my favorite quotes with you. It bears such depth and meaning for me that I keep a copy of it hanging on my wall, and I stop and read it often so that I might remember all that experience has taught me about personal freedom and happiness. Perhaps, it will remind you of what I know you already know, as well.

“Set yourself free from anything that might hinder you in becoming the person you want to be. Free yourself from the uncertainties about your abilities or the worth of your dreams, from the fears that you may not be able to achieve them or that they won’t be what you wanted.

Set yourself free from the past. The good things from yesterday are still yours in memory; the things you want to forget you will, for tomorrow is only a sunrise away. Free yourself from regret or guilt, and promise to live this day as fully as you can.

Set yourself free from the expectations of others, and never feel guilty or embarrassed if you do not live up to their standards. You are most important to yourself; live by what you feel is best and right for you. Others will come to respect your integrity and honesty.

Set yourself free to simply be yourself, and you will soar higher than you’ve ever dreamed.”

  7. What a meaningful quote Sloan. I can understand why you would have this close to hand! The keys words for me are ‘set yourself free.’ Our personal freedom comes from within. And even if our circumstances and challenges have a hold on our lives we can still be spiritually and emotionally free.
